Normally there would be a Shop for a Cure in the Spring however, I am due to have my baby at the beginning of May therefore it will only take place this fall. Stay tuned towards the end of the summer for updates as to the date, place and time of our next event.

The passing of one of our vendors

For those of you who have come out or participated in my craft and vendors fairs for the past two years, you will remember the Stampin Up consultant Linda Inverso. It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I report that she passed away last Monday. Linda was a wonderful personable person. She will be sadly missed.

Meet the Highland Heartbeats

Shop for a Cure's Relay for Life Team this November is the Highland Heartbeats. The Highland Heartbeats is lead by Karen Martin (in purple on the left behind me). All of these wonderful women work at Physicians Health Alliance in Honesdale, PA.

We are counting down the weeks until Shop for a Cure kicks off and we hope you'll help us meet our goal of raising $500 for The American Cancer Society.

General Admission, Directions and Details

Shop for a Cure will take place on November 11th from 10am-3pm at the Hamlin Bingo Hall Rte 590 in Hamlin, PA 18427. The Hamlin Bingo Hall has no actual street address that can be looked up on mapquest, however, it is located directly off Rte 590 across from Weis Supermarket and adjacent to Hamlin Fire & Rescue. There is a small dirt road that leads up the hill to the Hamlin Bingo Hall. In a few weeks a banner will be visible at the end of the road so that the location can be found easily to those who are unfamiliar with the area.

General Admission is $3 for adults and children 12 and under are free.

There will be a raffle to benefit The American Cancer Society in Wayne County with products donated by all of our vendors. The Highland Heartbeats Relay For Life Team will be our on hand volunteers.

You can see who the vendors are by looking in our sidebar; some have websites, some do not. This event is a combination of handmade crafts/jewelry and retail vendors.

I hope you'll stop by and visit us, so we can meet our goal of raising $500+ for The American Cancer Society in Wayne County.

Shop for a Cure Fall 2006

Shop for a Cure will take place again on November 11th 2006 from 10am-3pm at the Hamlin Bingo Hall. It is located on Rte 590 in Hamlin PA. It will continue to fundraise for The American Cancer Society.

I will be seeking out local businesses to help sponsor this event, so if you were recently contacted, your prompt attention is appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to come out and Shop for a Cure! We raised $300 and had a few people interested in volunteering for The American Cancer Society.

Congratulations to our grand prize winner Joyce D. of Lake Ariel PA! She won baskets filled with products from our vendors worth $500!

The next Shop for a Cure will take place in the fall and will continue to benefit The American Cancer Society.

My husband's aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She was very faithful with her mammogram's every year, yet it did not pick up the cancer in her breast that she had growing for 4 years. Thanks to a self exam, she found the lump and quickly brought it to the attention of her doctor. Unfortunately, she had to have this breast removed last summer.

At this point, I decided to get involved with doing something to help in research for breast cancer. With the help of Kate Carmody, owner of Kate's Creative Hair Design and a breast cancer survivor, I organized "Pamper for a Cure" in October of 2005. I was on a mission to pamper guests who came into Kate's salon with Country Bunny Bath & Body products and donate my entire commission that month to The American Cancer Society in Northeast PA. Kate and I, along with some very wonderful local businesses who matched our donation, raised $1000.

Through all of this, I began to meet other women just diagnosed with breast cancer, those who have survived and the family members of those who had not. In fact, one of my good friend's lost her mother to breast cancer in March of 2005. In the last year I had organized 2 Women's Shopping Expo's (similar to a craft fair) here in my area, so transitioning those events into "Shop for a Cure" was an easy decision. I chose to also support Ovarian Cancer, as I feel it is just as important as breast cancer. Ovarian Cancer is known as the "silent killer" because its symptoms closely resemble having the flu. (See Symptoms here). I also felt like Ovarian Cancer is not in the news enough (in fact, rarely) and I really wanted to bring it into the spotlight.

I chose The American Cancer Society as my charity of choice because they are more in contact with local women who need support. The money that is raised through Shop for a Cure will help local women, and that means a lot to me. As I did with Pamper for a Cure, I will be asking the ACS to designate the money raised to go towards services for women diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer. This includes, but is not limited to, assistance with transportation to chemo./dr. appt.'s, assistance with medication costs, assistance with wigs, support groups, etc. A portion of the proceeds from Shop for a Cure go to the Northeast PA Chapter of The American Cancer Society. This is done through a combination of the general admission fee and from some of the vendors who will be donating various percentages on this day. The Relay for Life team involved will be holding a bake sale and afghan raffle.

As a member of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, I am also inviting my fellow chamber members to match or partially match the funds we raise. If you are in the Northeast PA area, or closeby in New York or New Jersey, won't you come out and support this event? I want to beat my last donation of $1000 and it can only be done with your help.

Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

As described on The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition website: Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer Ovarian cancer is difficult to detect, especially, in the early stages. This is partly due to the fact that these two small, almond shaped organs are deep within the abdominal cavity, one on each side of the uterus. These are some of the potential signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer: · Pelvic or abdominal pain or discomfort · Vague, but persistent gastrointestinal upsets such as gas, nausea, and indigestion · Frequency and/or urgency of urination in absence of an infection · Unexplained weight gain or weight loss · Pelvic and/or abdominal swelling, bloating and/or feeling of fullness · Ongoing unusual fatigue · Unexplained changes in bowel habits

Early Signs of Breast Cancer

As described on The National Breast Cancer Foundation website: * A lump is detected, which is usually single, firm, and most often painless. * A portion of the skin on the breast or underarm swells and has an unusual appearance. * Veins on the skin surface become more prominent on one breast. * The breast nipple becomes inverted, develops a rash, changes in skin texture, or has a discharge other than breast milk. * A depression is found in an area of the breast surface. Women's breasts can develop some degree of lumpiness, but only a small percentage of lumps are malignant. While a history of breast cancer in the family may lead to increased risk, most breast cancers are diagnosed in women with no family history. If you have a family history of breast cancer, this should be discussed with your doctor.
